Gregory Lake
Gregory Lake: The Lake in Central Nuwara Eliya
Gregory Lake is in the centre of Nuwara Eliya, a town often called 'Little England'. Governor William Gregory had the lake built in 1873, turning a swampy valley into a recreation area. It is busiest during the April season.
Things to do
Swimming is not allowed. The lake is surrounded by flower beds and Swiss-style cottages. In the evenings the area is lit up and local vendors sell hot snacks. Many cafes and restaurants around the lake serve local and international food. It gets cold in the late afternoon and evening, so bring a warm jacket.
Getting there by car
Gregory Lake is 165 km from the airport. The drive takes 5 hours via Gampola or 4 hours via the Central Expressway and Kandy. The last stretch is a long climb with many hairpin bends, so a powerful, comfortable car is preferable: see [rent a car in Sri Lanka](/rent-a-car-sri-lanka).
