Hakgala Botanical Garden: A Highland Garden Near Nuwara Eliya
Hakgala Botanical Garden was established in 1861. It lies at the foot of Hakgala Rock (Elephant Jaw Rock), 10 km south of Nuwara Eliya town. It is cooler and mistier than gardens at lower altitudes.
In the garden
The site is traditionally linked to the Ramayana. According to the legend, it was part of the 'Ashoka Vatika', the gardens of King Ravana, where Sita was held captive. The garden has:
The garden has views over the Uva Valley and the distant mountains near Badulla. It is built on a slope, so there are paths with steps and inclines, and paths can become slippery in rain. Allow at least 2 hours to see the main sections. A small kiosk near the entrance sells snacks and drinks, but bring your own water.
Getting there by car
The garden is 175 km from the airport, about 5.5 hours by road. From Nuwara Eliya town it is 10 km, about 20 minutes along winding roads. Going early in the morning means the flowers are at their best, and a rental car makes that easy: see [rent a car in Sri Lanka](/rent-a-car-sri-lanka).
