Horton Plains & World's End
Horton Plains and World's End: A 9 km Loop in the Highlands
Horton Plains National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a high-altitude plateau of montane grassland and cloud forest. Wildlife includes the Sri Lanka White-eye, the Purple-faced Langur and large herds of sambar deer.
The World's End hike
The main trail is a 9 km circular route. It is relatively flat but has some uneven ground, and the loop takes about 3-4 hours. It passes:
The path is well marked and easy to follow. A nature guide is optional but can help you spot endemic wildlife.
Timing
Reach World's End before 9:30 AM. After that, thick mist usually rises from the valley and blocks the view. This means leaving your Nuwara Eliya hotel by 4:30 AM or 5:00 AM, so you arrive at the entrance around sunrise.
Getting there by car
The park is 195 km from the airport. The total travel time is 6 hours, including 3 hours from Nuwara Eliya. Because of the early start, a reliable car and a punctual driver matter: see [rent a car in Sri Lanka](/rent-a-car-sri-lanka).
