Pedro Tea Estate
Pedro Tea Estate: Factory Tours Near Nuwara Eliya
Pedro Tea Estate is a short drive from Nuwara Eliya town, at the foot of Piduruthalagala, Sri Lanka's highest peak. It produces a light-coloured, delicate tea. The estate is about 4 km east of the town centre, a 10-15 minute drive.
The factory tour
The tour shows the traditional tea-making process. Because the tea is delicate, some stages, such as withering, take place at night when the air is coolest. Cooler temperatures stop the leaves from fermenting too quickly. On the tour you see:
The estate has a shop selling tea produced on site. Visitors can sometimes try plucking a few leaves for a photo. Aprons or overcoats are provided for parts of the tour, for hygiene. Tours run daily except on holidays and certain processing days, and morning is the best time to go.
Lovers Leap Waterfall
The Lovers Leap waterfall is nearby and can be reached by a short walk through the tea bushes.
Getting there by car
The estate is 168 km from the airport, about 5 hours by road. A rental car lets you take the plantation roads at your own pace: see [rent a car in Sri Lanka](/rent-a-car-sri-lanka).
