There is no single best month for all of Sri Lanka, because two monsoons bring rain to different coasts at different times of year. That is good news for a road trip: whatever the month, part of the island is usually in its dry season, and a car lets you head for it. This guide gives the typical pattern for each region. Weather varies from year to year, so check the forecast shortly before you travel.
Why the island has two seasons
The south-west monsoon usually brings rain to the west and south coasts and to the western hill country from about May to September. The north-east monsoon usually brings rain to the north and east from about October or November to January. Between and after them, many areas have drier spells. The central hill country can have showers in any month, with the driest weather often in the early part of the year.
Typical best seasons by region
Use this table as a starting point, not a guarantee.
| Region | Usually best | Usually wetter |
|---|---|---|
| West and south coast (Bentota, Galle, Mirissa, Unawatuna) | About November to April | About May to September |
| East coast (Trincomalee, Pasikuda, Arugam Bay) | About April or May to September | About October to January |
| Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura) | Drier months in the first part of the year and mid-year | Heavier rain around the north-east monsoon |
| Hill country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella) | Often January to March, with clear mornings | Showers can come in any month; afternoon mist is common |
| Yala and the south-east | Dry season, roughly February to July | Wetter around the monsoon months |
Planning a driving trip around the seasons
If you travel between November and April, the south and west coast and the hill country are the natural focus, and Galle is at its best (calm seas, sunny days). If you travel from May to September, the east coast around Trincomalee and Pasikuda is usually in season and the Cultural Triangle suits mid-year travel. In the shoulder months you can combine regions and choose the day's route by the forecast.
Our guides give driving times for each route, so you can fit the order of your stops to the weather. For example, Colombo Airport to Galle by car is about 2 to 2.5 hours on the expressways, while Colombo Airport to Trincomalee by car takes about 5.5 to 6.5 hours.
Driving in the rain and mist
Roads are slick in heavy rain and visibility in the hills can drop to a few metres in mist. Slow down, leave a larger gap, switch on dipped headlights and stop at viewpoints instead of looking at the scenery while driving. Leave extra time on hill roads. For choosing a vehicle for those roads, see the best cars for Sri Lanka's hill country.
Seasonal highlights to plan around
Some experiences depend on the season: whale watching off the south coast is usually best in the cooler months of the year, elephant gatherings at the Minneriya and Kaudulla parks are linked to the dry season in the middle of the year, and the Nine Arches Bridge in Ella is busiest when trains pass. Confirm dates with your tour operator before you build a day around one of them.
Quick tips
- Match the coast to the month: south and west in the cooler months, east in the middle of the year.
- Check the forecast for your actual days; patterns shift from year to year.
- Start hill-country drives early to enjoy the clearer mornings.
- Allow extra driving time in the rain.
