The cost of a private driver in Sri Lanka is not one price. It is built from a vehicle, a driver, fuel, expressway tolls, the driver's food and bed, and the distance you cover. Two quotes for the same trip can differ a lot because one lists items the other leaves out. This guide explains each part, shows what moves the total up or down, and gives you a checklist to compare quotes honestly. For a quote for your own dates, message us on WhatsApp at +94 777425008.
What makes up the price of a car with a driver

A private driver quote usually has these parts. Ask for each one to be stated, in writing, so that you know what you are paying for.
| Part | What it covers | Ask |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle | The car or van for the days you book; the larger and newer it is, the higher the price | Which exact vehicle, and is it air-conditioned? |
| Driver | An experienced, English-speaking driver for the whole trip | Is his fee included in the daily price? |
| Fuel | Petrol or diesel for the route | Included, or charged by the kilometre? |
| Distance | Kilometres covered each day | Is there a daily limit and what is the price of extra kilometres? |
| Expressway tolls and parking | Charges on the road and at sites | Included or paid by you? |
| Driver's meals and bed | Most tourist hotels give the driver a room; where they do not, a driver allowance is arranged | Who pays when the hotel has no driver room? |
| Waiting time | Hours at sites, a late finish | How is an overrun charged? |
| Airport pickup and drop | Meeting you at Colombo airport and taking you back | Part of the package or separate? |
What changes the cost
- The vehicle: a hybrid sedan costs less than a crossover, a Land Cruiser Prado or a van. See the daily rate of every car for the vehicle's own price per day.
- The number of days: longer tours cost less per day than a single transfer or a one-day tour.
- The route: a hill-country route with long climbs uses more fuel and time than the flat south-coast road.
- The season: December to March and public holidays are busy; book early.
- The group size: the total depends on the vehicle, not on the passengers, so the cost per person falls as you fill the car.
How to cut the cost per person
A private driver is cheapest per person when the vehicle is full. A family of four in one Honda Vezel or Toyota C-HR pays the vehicle and the driver once; four separate taxis or tuk-tuks over a long route cost more and give you less comfort. For groups of six or more, a Toyota Hiace KDH van seats 10 or more with one driver, so the cost per head is lower again; see van rental with driver in Sri Lanka.
| Party | Sensible vehicle | Why the cost per person is lower |
|---|---|---|
| 1-2 travellers | Hybrid sedan (Prius, Axio) | The smallest vehicle, with good fuel economy |
| 3-4 travellers | Honda Vezel or Toyota C-HR | Four share one vehicle and one driver |
| 5-7 travellers | Toyota Land Cruiser Prado | One vehicle instead of two |
| 8-14 travellers | Toyota Hiace KDH van | One vehicle, one driver, shared luggage space |
Private driver or self-drive: which costs less?

For one or two people on a long trip, self-drive is cheaper, because you pay for the car and fuel but not for a driver. For a family or a group, a car with a driver is often similar in cost and far less tiring, because the driver deals with the roads, the parking and the tolls. Your fuel, tolls and parking are yours in self-drive; in a chauffeur-driven package they are usually part of the price. Compare both for your trip: ask us for a self-drive quote and a driver quote with the same dates. Our guide self-drive or driver? lists the other differences, and how to hire a chauffeur-driven car explains the booking.
Quote checklist: five questions before you pay
- Is the driver's fee included in the price you were given?
- Are fuel, tolls and parking included, and how are extra kilometres charged?
- Who pays for the driver's room and meals?
- What is the vehicle exactly, and can I see a photograph of it?
- Is there a deposit, and what is the cancellation arrangement?
How we price a chauffeur-driven trip
H.B.S. Rent a Car quotes each chauffeur-driven trip for its dates and route. Tour packages cover fuel, toll fees, driver accommodation and insurance; the quote states what is included. Our drivers are experienced, English-speaking and licensed. Tell us the dates, the places, the number of travellers and the bags, and we reply with a vehicle and a price. See chauffeur-driven tours.
