Muhudu Maha Viharaya
Muhudu Maha Viharaya: Echoes in the Sand
Muhudu Maha Viharaya is a historic Buddhist temple located on the beach at Pottuvil. Built over 2,000 years ago by King Kavan Tissa, the ruins are situated among the towering sand dunes.
Ancient Statues
The most striking feature of the temple is the collection of well-preserved standing statues of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas. These stone figures, standing against the backdrop of the blue sea, provide a powerful and atmospheric experience.
Legend of the Queen
Local tradition holds that this is the spot where Queen Viharamahadevi drifted ashore after being cast to sea to appease the gods. The ruins are believed to be part of the palace where she was first received.
