Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi: The Living Heritage
The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a sacred fig tree in the Mahamewna Gardens of Anuradhapura. It is said to be the southern branch of the original Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment.
The Oldest Documented Tree
Brought to Sri Lanka by Sanghamitta Theri (daughter of Emperor Ashoka) in the 3rd century BC, it is the oldest living, human-planted tree in the world with a continuous recorded history.
A Symbol of Faith: For over 2,300 years, the tree has been guarded and cared for by successive kings and monks.
The Golden Fence: The tree is protected by a series of terraces and a golden fence (Ran Veta) to ensure its preservation.
Religious Significance: It is one of the most sacred sites in the Buddhist world, attracting thousands of devotees every day.Rituals and Offerings
The area surrounding the tree is filled with 'Pansala' (temple) atmosphere. Devotees offer white lotus flowers and perform 'Atavisi Puja' (offerings to 28 Buddhas) to seek blessings.
