Mount Lavinia Beach: A Legacy of Romance and the Sea
Located just south of Colombo's city limits, Mount Lavinia is a prestigious suburb famous for its "Golden Mile" of beach. It is a place where history meets the ocean, anchored by the majestic Mount Lavinia Hotel, one of the most romantic and historic buildings in Sri Lanka.
The Legend of Lovina
The history of Mount Lavinia is steeped in a legendary romance. In 1805, the British Governor Sir Thomas Maitland built a mansion on a rocky promontory overlooking the ocean. Legend has it that he fell in love with a local dancer named Lovina Aponsuwa. To meet her in secret, he constructed a hidden tunnel from his mansion to a nearby well. The name "Mount Lavinia" is said to be derived from her name. Today, that mansion is the world-renowned Mount Lavinia Hotel.
