Maligatenna Raja Maha Viharaya: A Peak of Devotion

Maligatenna is a spectacular hilltop temple located near Tiwanthota, Gampaha. It is renowned for being the highest point in the Gampaha district, offering travelers unmatched views of the surrounding plains and distant mountain ranges.

The Fortress of Faith

Historically, this site served as a secure hiding place for the sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha during times of foreign invasion. The complex is divided into several levels:

The Lower Temple: Houses the main shrine and monk dwellings.

The Mid-level Caves: Ancient meditation caves nestled among massive granite boulders.

The Summit: Home to a small stupa and a breathtaking panoramic viewpoint.

The Climb to the Summit

The ascent to the top involves climbing several hundred stone steps carved into the rock. Along the way, you pass through narrow fissures and lush vegetation. Once at the peak, on a clear day, you can see as far as the Colombo skyline and the peak of Sri Pada (Adam's Peak).
