Hummanaya Blow Hole

Hummanaya: The Thunder of the Sea

Hummanaya is the only known blow hole in Sri Lanka and is considered the second largest in the world. Located near the fishing village of Kudawella, it is a spectacular geological wonder.

The Sound and the Fury

The name "Hummanaya" comes from the "hoo" sound that the sea makes before the water erupts. The phenomenon occurs when sea water is forced through a narrow fissure at the base of the rock and shoots up to 30 meters (almost 100 feet) into the air.

The Viewing Deck

A well-maintained path and a series of steps lead to a high-perched viewing platform above the fissure, offering a safe and exciting vantage point to witness the eruption.

Travel Guidance

  • Distance: 215 km from the airport.
  • Timing: The blow hole is most spectacular during the South-West Monsoon (May to September) when the sea is rough and the eruptions are more frequent and higher.
