Jaffna Fort: The Guardian of the North
Jaffna Fort is the second-largest Dutch fort in Sri Lanka. Originally a Portuguese fortress, it was captured and extensively redesigned by the Dutch in the 17th century into a classic star-shaped citadel.
Architecture and Resilience
The fort's massive ramparts are built using black coral and limestone, materials native to the Jaffna peninsula. While much of the interior was damaged during the civil war, several structures remain:
