The Legend of Fa-Hien
The name of the cave is derived from the famous Chinese Buddhist monk Fa-Hien, who is believed to have visited and stayed in the caves during his travels to Sri Lanka in the 5th century AD. Today, a Buddhist temple is located within the massive cave mouth, featuring a large reclining Buddha statue.
