Kalutara Bodhiya
Kalutara Bodhiya: A Landmark of Faith and Architecture
Kalutara Bodhiya is one of the most prominent religious landmarks in Sri Lanka, situated right by the Kalu River on the Galle Road. It is famous for housing one of the 32 saplings of the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura.
The Unique Hollow Stupa
The most striking feature of the temple is the Kalutara Vihara, a massive hollow stupa. Unlike traditional solid stupas, visitors can enter this one. The interior is decorated with 74 stunning murals depicting Jataka stories (the previous lives of the Buddha). The architectural design allows for a serene atmosphere for meditation and prayer within the heart of the stupa itself.
A Gateway to the South
For travelers heading towards the southern beaches, Kalutara Bodhiya is a traditional stopping point. It is customary for drivers to stop here and make a small donation for a safe journey. The sight of the massive white dome against the backdrop of the river and the ocean is a beautiful introduction to the coastal wonders of the island.
