Kandy Lake
Kandy Lake: The shimmering Jewel of the Hills
Kandy Lake, also known as Bogambara Lake, is an artificial lake in the heart of the hill city of Kandy. Built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the last ruler of the Kingdom of Kandy, it is surrounded by a beautiful decorative wall known as the 'Walakulu' wall (Clouds wall).
A Royal Vision
The lake was originally intended to be a place of beauty and a defense for the royal palace. In the center of the lake is a small island which was used as a summer house by the king's harem. Today, the lake is a protected area, and swimming or fishing is strictly prohibited to preserve its tranquility and the wildlife within.
