Mannar Fort
Mannar Fort: A Bastion of the Gulf
Mannar Fort is a historic coastal fortress located on the southeastern edge of Mannar Island. Built by the Portuguese in 1560 and later captured and expanded by the Dutch, the fort has guarded the northern waters for centuries.
Architecture and Ruins
Unlike the star-shaped Jaffna fort, Mannar Fort is square in design with four bastions at the corners. While many of the interior colonial buildings are in ruins, the massive ramparts still stand tall, offering glimpses into its military past.
A Quiet Explorer's Dream
The fort is often very quiet, allowing for a peaceful exploration of its ruins. It is a must-visit for anyone interested in the colonial history of the western coast.
