Dondra Head Lighthouse
Dondra Head: Where the Island Ends
Located in the village of Devinuwara, just east of Matara, Dondra Head is the southernmost point of Sri Lanka. Standing on the edge of the cliff, there is nothing but open ocean between you and the Antarctic.
The Tallest Beacon
The Dondra Head Lighthouse is a magnificent 160-foot tall structure built by the British in 1889. The white tower, surrounded by swaying palm trees and the blue sea, is one of the most picturesque sights in the country.
Devinuwara Temple
The area is also home to the ancient Devinuwara temple, dedicated to the god Vishnu. It was once a massive complex that was destroyed by the Portuguese and later rebuilt. The temple remains a major site of religious importance.
