Weurukannala Temple: A Monument of Scale and Story

Located in Dikwella, the Weurukannala Buduraja Maha Viharaya is famous for its massive seated Buddha statue, which is the tallest of its kind in Sri Lanka at 50 meters (164 feet).

The Giant Buddha

The statue is hollow, and visitors can climb behind it to see various small rooms depicting Buddhist stories. The views from the upper levels of the statue are impressive.

The Path to Hell

One of the most unique and somewhat terrifying features of the temple is its "Hell Murals". Life-sized statues and vibrant paintings depict the various punishments in the afterlife for different sins. It is a vivid and unforgettable educational experience.
