Driving in Sri Lanka as a foreign visitor needs more than your home licence. The rules for foreign drivers have been revised more than once in recent years, and different websites describe different procedures. This guide explains what the main documents are, what our rental terms require, and how to confirm the current rules before you travel. It is general information, not legal advice; the authorities have the final word.
What our rental terms require
To hire a car from H.B.S. Rent a Car, the driver must be at least 21, hold a valid national driving licence with at least one to two years of experience, and, if a foreign national, hold a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) or obtain a temporary driving endorsement from the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC). Only drivers named in the rental agreement may drive. See the terms and conditions.

Why different websites disagree
Travel websites, tuk-tuk rental blogs and forum posts give different procedures. Some say the AAC route needs an IDP; others describe a DMT temporary licence that you apply for in person. Some mention that a temporary licence can be issued at the airport, which we have not been able to confirm. Validity is often tied to the length of your visa, but sources differ on the period. Treat any single blog, including this one, as a starting point and check with the authority.
How to get it right
- Get your International Driving Permit in your home country before you leave. It is quick and cheap there, and difficult to arrange from abroad.
- Contact the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) or the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) to confirm the current procedure, fees and documents.
- Tell us your nationality, licence type and arrival date; we can guide you through the endorsement process. Our terms and the self-drive service page describe the assistance we provide.
- Bring passport, visa or ETA, home licence, IDP and passport-size photographs.
- Keep originals with you in the car, and photographs of them on your phone.
Without the right documents
Driving without the correct documents can lead to a fine or a prosecution, and it can invalidate the insurance. Our insurance does not apply if the driver is unlicensed.
