Visitors who want to drive in Sri Lanka usually ask about a 'temporary driving licence'. Sources describe two routes: a temporary licence from the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) and a recognition or endorsement permit from the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC). The details, fees and where you can apply have changed several times and websites disagree, so this guide explains the idea, lists what to bring and tells you how to confirm the current rules. It is general information, not legal advice.
The two routes in short

| Temporary licence (DMT) | Recognition or endorsement permit (AAC) | |
|---|---|---|
| Issued by | Department of Motor Traffic | Automobile Association of Ceylon |
| What it is | A short-term Sri Lankan licence for a visitor | A permit that lets a foreign licence be used in Sri Lanka |
| Usually asked for | Passport, visa, home licence | Home licence, passport, International Driving Permit, photographs |
| Validity | Reported to follow the length of your visa | Check with the AAC |
| Vehicle classes | Reported to be limited, often cars and motorcycles | Check with the AAC |
Documents to prepare

- An International Driving Permit from your home country; see International Driving Permit in Sri Lanka
- Passport-size photographs and the completed application form
- Cash or a card for the fee (confirm the amount with the office)
What our rental terms ask
To hire a self-drive car from H.B.S. Rent a Car, the driver must be at least 21 and have a valid licence with one to two years of experience. A foreign national must hold a valid International Driving Permit or obtain a temporary driving endorsement from the AAC. We can assist with the endorsement once you have booked; see self-drive rental. Our terms are in terms and conditions.
Why you must check the current rules
Blogs and tuk-tuk rental sites describe different procedures: whether an IDP must come first, where you can apply (an office in Colombo or, according to some, a desk at the airport), and how long the permit lasts. We have not been able to confirm every claim, so we do not repeat them as fact. Before you fly, contact the Automobile Association of Ceylon or the Department of Motor Traffic, ask for the current fee, documents and validity, and keep a written copy of the answer.
If it is not ready in time
Do not drive without the right documents: it can lead to a fine and it makes the insurance void. Travel with a driver instead and drive yourself later. See how to hire a chauffeur-driven car, and the general guide driving licence rules for tourists.
