Most of Sri Lanka's tourist routes are paved and a normal car manages them. A 4x4 or SUV is worth the cost for rougher side roads, steep hill sections, heavy luggage or large groups, and for the comfort of sitting higher. This guide explains where it helps, where it does not, and one thing it is not for. For the service see 4x4 and SUV rentals.
Rough roads, not rallying
Our rental terms prohibit racing, off-road rallying, towing other vehicles, transporting hazardous goods and illegal commercial activities. 'Off-road' in this guide therefore means unpaved or damaged roads, such as the tracks to remote viewpoints, estates and trailheads, not driving off the road for sport. Driving a rental SUV into rivers, sand or forest is not permitted and would void your insurance.
Where an SUV helps
| Route | Road condition | Is an SUV useful? |
|---|---|---|
| Southern Expressway and A-roads | Good | No, a sedan is fine |
| Kandy - Nuwara Eliya - Ella | Paved, steep, bends, patches | Helpful for comfort and clearance |
| Knuckles / Riverston | Narrow, steep, rougher in parts | Yes; high clearance is valuable |
| Meemure and remote villages | Rough, narrow | Yes; ask us about the current road condition |
| Horton Plains approach | Narrow, steep, early start | Helpful but not essential |
| Yala and other parks | Park tracks | Not applicable: private cars are not allowed in Yala; you use a safari jeep |
Crossover or full SUV?
A crossover such as the Honda Vezel or Toyota C-HR is lighter, cheaper to run and easier to park, with enough clearance for most hill roads. The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is a full four-wheel-drive SUV with seven seats and much more space and capability, but it uses more fuel and is wide in narrow lanes. Choose the Prado for rough roads, a group of five to seven or lots of luggage. Choose a crossover for two to four people on mixed roads.
| Crossover (Vezel, C-HR) | Full SUV (Land Cruiser Prado) | |
|---|---|---|
| Seats | 5 | 6-7 |
| Drive | Front-wheel or all-wheel, depending on model | Four-wheel drive |
| Rough roads | Light | Strong |
| Fuel use | Lower | Higher |
| Parking and narrow lanes | Easier | Harder |
| Luggage | Moderate | Large |
Tips for driving an SUV
- Higher vehicles roll more; slow down for bends.
- Do not rely on four-wheel drive for braking; leave a larger gap in rain.
- Check the width before entering narrow lanes and car parks.
- Report any warning lights or noises to us immediately.
- Carry water, a torch and a charged phone on remote routes.
- Tell us where you plan to go; we advise on current road conditions.
Self-drive or with a driver
SUVs are available for self-drive and with a chauffeur. On remote hill roads a local driver knows the surface and the weather. You can combine the two; see chauffeur-driven tours and self-drive rental.
Seasons and road conditions
Roads in the hills and the wet zone become slippery in the monsoon periods, with mud, fallen leaves and occasional landslides. In the dry zone, dust and heat are the main problems, and elephants cross after dusk. Plan for earlier starts in the wet months, and ask your hotel about road conditions each morning. Where a road is closed or flooded, turn back; no sight is worth the risk.
Checks before a rough-road day
- Fuel: fill up; stations can be far apart in the hills and the east.
- Tyres: check pressure and look for cuts, and know where the spare and jack are.
- Water, food and a charged phone with offline maps.
- A torch, a warm layer for the highlands and a rain jacket.
- Tell your hotel where you are going and when you expect to be back.
- Phone coverage can fail: note the number of our 24/7 line on paper as well.
If you get stuck or break down
Stay with the vehicle, switch on the hazard lights, and call our 24/7 line with your location. Under our terms, if a roadside repair cannot be completed quickly, an equivalent replacement vehicle is provided, subject to location and availability. Do not attempt to tow the vehicle or to have it repaired by a stranger without calling us first.
