Parakrama Samudraya: The Sea of Parakrama
The Parakrama Samudraya is a massive Shallow reservoir located in Polonnaruwa. Built by King Parakramabahu the Great, it is a masterpiece of ancient hydraulic engineering, consisting of three separate tanks joined together.
"Not a Drop of Water to the Sea"
The king famously declared that not a single drop of water falling as rain should flow into the ocean without serving the people.
Massive Scale: The reservoir is so large that it creates its own micro-climate and is often called the 'Sea of Polonnaruwa.'
The Bund Drive: A long, beautiful road runs along the top of the reservoir's massive earthen dam, offering spectacular sunset views.
Nature and Wildlife: Many species of water birds, and occasionally wild elephants, can be seen along the banks. The Heart of Agriculture
Even today, after 800 years, the reservoir continues to give life to the vast paddy fields of the North Central Province.
